1.1 Navigating the Google Cloud Console

Clicking this opens a sidebar with categorized lists of services like Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, IAM & Admin, etc. To find the Compute Engine service (for virtual machines), you would open the navigation menu and locate it under the “Compute” category.

• Search Bar: Located at the top, the search bar allows you to quickly find specific services, documentation, or even resources (like a particular virtual machine instance). For example, typing “cloud storage buckets” in the search bar will take you directly to the Cloud Storage bucket listing.

• Dashboard: The default landing page provides an overview of your Google Cloud environment. It often displays key metrics, recent activity, billing summaries, and links to commonly used services within your selected project.

• Activity Stream: This log shows recent actions performed within your project, such as creating a virtual machine or deploying an application. This is helpful for troubleshooting and auditing.

• Billing and Quotas: The Console provides access to billing information, showing your cloud spending and usage. You can also view your project’s quotas (limits on resource usage) and request increases if needed.

• IAM & Admin: This section allows you to manage access control for your project. You can grant specific permissions to users or service accounts, determining who can access and modify resources. You could grant a developer “Compute Instance Admin” access to your “my-web-app” project, allowing them to manage virtual machines.

Example Scenario:

Let’s say you want to create a new Cloud Storage bucket. Here’s how you would navigate the Console:

1. Project Selection: Ensure you’ve selected the correct project from the dropdown.
2. Navigation Menu: Open the navigation menu (hamburger menu).
3. Find Cloud Storage: Look for “Cloud Storage” under the “Storage” category and click it.
4. Bucket Listing: You’ll be taken to a page that lists existing buckets (if any) and provides an option to create a new one.

In essence: Navigating the Google Cloud Console means using the menu system, search bar, and other interface elements to access and manage the Google Cloud services you need within your chosen project.
